Wayne Cook -- 1st Place -- SS class (19 laps(corrected)
Steven Kelly -- 2nd Place -- SS Class (18 laps(corrected) (not a team member, might be a site member -- but he twirls wrenches with Napper from time to time and has raced three 12hrs on a single speed this year)
Napper -- 4th Place -- SS Class
Chris Maltby -- 1st Place Men's 30-39 class (17 Laps)
Jeff Zimmerman and Adam Swan had the high lap count -- 21 and 20. It was a race the whole 12 hrs for those two.
The race started off fast. I Ied the race for the the first two hours or so, with Jeff Zimmerman on my wheel the whole time. Wayne was there for awhile too. Once I lapped the other two guys in my age class, I slowed my race down, and Zimmerman pushed on with Swan just a few seconds behind.
The course was rough in places. Both Napper and Mike Seaman slashed tires on the rocks, Seaman on his first lap. Other parts of the trail were wide open hammer fests. I ran a higher gear than the other SS'ers in the race. It paid big on the rocky gravel roads that make up a lot of the trail. Navigating the two rocky, rooty single track sections, was tough. I was Sally so high it was like riding a fixed gear through these technical sections. It was hard to keep pedaling and not catch my pedals.
By 6:30 I was four laps up on second and six laps up on third place. With Jeff and Adam still trading the overall and my lead pretty safe, I met up with Gunnar27 for a swim in the pool. When the team really takes off, I think a mobile hot tube or pool should be a necessity. I was so much faster after a quick swim and soak in the hot tub. After this break, I went back out to make up my lost laps. I raced on and off until 11 pm, and checked out with a safe lead.
Napper had a great ride. He did hang it up before midnight, but he was flying out there. Everyone I talked to had a great time at this race. Wayne was flying too. He kept racing until after 11, I believe. Steve Kelly kept him going. Hopefully, Steve does Hansen, though his schedule doesn't sound like it will allow it. He also raced at Ithaca and Pando, so Hansen would be his fourth race to be scored for the points series.
I think Wayne cemented the overall single speed points in the series. I have the age group points in the bag. I don't need to show up at Hansen, but I will ride something there.
This was a great race to do. It was pretty easy to get there. The resort was very reasonable ($25 a night!), the food was good, and it was so convenient to have the start near our rooms -- and the pool! It also seems that Drummond will be a race venue next year too. The resort broke room booking records for this weekend and convinced Brent to come back next year. I'll be doing this one again. Hopefully more people do too. A larger field would be great.
