the henry ford -

A couple of weekends ago I flew back to Detroit for the wedding of an old friend. Aside from catching a Tiger game (where a guy you may of heard of, Kenny Loggins, sang the National Anthem), eating some home cooking and catching up with some people I haven't seen in years, I visited the The Henry Ford Museum with my parents. I'd been to both the museum and adjoining Greenfield Village as a kid, but had been wanting for years to get back.

Wow, was it worth it! I'm a history buff I won't lie, but the collection there far exceeded my expectations. To mention just a few of the artifacts on display: the Rosa Parks bus,  some of the original Model T assembly line, an Eames chair mold, Buckminster Fuller's Dymaxion House, the chair Lincoln was shot in, steam engines, heavy machinery, race cars, motorcycles, bicycles, air planes, etc. Pure Americana, the place is fantastic.

I didn't bring a great camera, but I did capture a few images with the trusty iPhone for you to enjoy.

I learned a new word there: "Dymanxion." Dynamic, Maximum, Tension. I was blown away by how awesome Fullers Dymaxion house was. At the end of the tour they ask "Would you buy one?" I nearly yelled YES! It was ahead of its time, I'm not surprised it didn't catch on though.

A bicycle built for 10? Yeah, they've got one of those.

I've always had a soft spot in my heart for futuristic furniture from the past... this was a nice treat for me. I've become pretty aware of the design of consumer products, so the Eames' have been compelling to me to say the least. I almost walked right by this display!

The car JFK was assasinated it? Yeah, they've got that too. Actually, they have several presidential limos. A little morbid that they have this AND the chair that Licoln was sitting in when he was shot at Fords Theatre, but interesting none the less.

Overall, highly recommended. If you are in Detroit for a few days and you want to see some real history, check out The Henry Ford.
