Registration is now open for the Lake Orion GAP Weeknight races, June 9 and 16. Races start at 6:45 behind the high school and include a mix of school fields, singletrack, and a portion of Bald Mountain. These are very low key races that are a good way to test your fitness and race against your friends. Jet's normally donates pizza for after the race. Races usually last about an hour or less, depending on the class. Cost is $15 or less for preregistering, $5 more for day of. For the Sport and Advanced riders we intend to use all of the trail, Beginners will have a shorter and easier loop. Some who have ridden the entire loop this year have said it's one of the hardest trails in SE Michigan. Come find out for yourself and see if you are up to the challenge.

Four weeks left until the

Four weeks left until the first race. I'm happy to report that the first race is sponsored by Rochester Bike Shop and the second by Cycletherapy. These shops have been consistent supporters of the program, please help support them as well.

The school has removed two of the dead trees I was not able to, trees that restricted the lines in two corners, especially the one at the bottom of a downhill after weaving through a small rock garden. The trail flows much better now. They are also working on a new downhill from the top of the soccer field, actually you now go all the way across the top to the wood line by the football field. The first part of the downhill sort of reminds me of a four cross track. It is in very rough shape right now but ridable.

Here is a link to an overview

Here is a link to an overview of the trails at Lake Orion High School as recorded by my phone. It is pretty accurate but missing a lot of the little corners. It recorded the distance as just over six miles but it is coming up short of what is measured by a bike computer. The elevation gain showed just over 1,000 feet of climbing which seems too high. But if you click on the end point you can see an elevation profile.

A quick update. The mail in

A quick update. The mail in registration forms have incorrect days, but the dates are correct. The races are on WEDNESDAY June 9 and 16.

And I just got this in an email from the school organizer:

"All preregistered riders receive a sweet Race t-shirt, and t-shirts will be available while supplies last for other riders. Likewise, 1st through 3rd place finishers will receive awards while student racers will receive special awards. All proceeds from the races go to the Lake Orion After School programs."

I think we will have Jet's Pizza as a sponsor again so free pizza after the races. That means for as little as $10 you get a race, pizza and a t-shirt. A big thanks to RBS and Cycletherapy for sponsoring the races again this year.

The trail was almost 100% dry

The trail was almost 100% dry today, even the really muddy spot in the singletrack. By tomorrow it should all be dry. The school has been working hard on making improvements in other areas of the two track. This weekend would be the perfect time to check out the trails. Remember that the trail now starts at the top of the football field. Starting by the lower ball field would have you missing some additional singletrack.

Just a reminder that

Just a reminder that preregistration for this week's race closes tonight at 11:00. The trail should be in good shape with two days of sunshine. Even a little rain race day morning will be OK.

The course is absolutely

The course is absolutely perfect condition today, no mud anywhere. It is in better shape than last Tuesday. Maybe we need to have our races on Tuesdays. Depending on the amount of rain we get tonight I expect the course to be in decent shape tomorrow by race time. I will post conditions around 3:30 or so.
