Maybury Chapter Benefit
Saturday, August 21
Any of you guys planning on doing Maybury in a couple of weeks??? it would be nice to meet some of my east side comrades. Can anyone give me a clue as to what expect from maybury? big climbs, little climbs, pancake flat???? I have been banking some pretty decent miles on the back country gravel around charlotte with quiring. We avg about 18 mph and I am currently running a 36 X 16.

Not I... blew my load all over Spartacus and didn't even get a kiss
I will check the calendar and maybe I can come down and cheerlead. (It isnt a sport. Our fearless leaders in Washington had the time to say so in between creating all the economic recovery... had to say it its election day ... get out your vote)

I have never ridden it but from what I gather its not very technical and flatter than most places I ride, the most I have heard people complain about over here was a sand pit and we know you westies know your sand

Riding with him can only make you faster
I run the same but I go out of my way for as many hills as I can get so my avg is probably a little lower.
I ride Maybury often. It's approx. 6 mile loop that starts off with pretty much the biggest climbs in the first mile. They're not technical, or that huge, but this time of year they are pretty dry, gravely and some are rutted. After that, the trail is pretty tight and twisty and is usually not very sandy--only in a few places is there notable sand, but this this weird summer rains/dry/rains, the trail is a tad sandier than usual--nothing like ILRA tho. Passing on this trail could be tricky, although come race day, the route will incorporate some paved path areas where you can fly by. I plan on being out there, but will be donning my Trails-Edge jersey as I ride for the shop. Perhaps I'll see some of ya out there.
** oh yeah, my 29er SS is set up with 32x17 and it works well at the 'bury. I could go lower, but I like to be able to bike up the hills. :) **
Maybury is a fun trail. Rolling hills and twisty. The trail has a really good flow to it. A few of the hills will make you get out of your saddle, but there are no prolonged climbs. I find 2:1 on a 29er to be perfect out there. I think your 36x16 setup would be fine too, especially for a race pace.
I did this race last year, and they used a fair amount of two-track to make the laps around 9 or 10 miles (I think). I won't be out there this year though.... I'll be on vacation!
Myself and Chuck will both be here as well single speed beginner. should be fun have never ridden this trail.

Coming from a home trail like poto it can only be easier ;)
Good Luck! get some photos if you can, I am not sure if I will make it down or not.
Will try and get some pics tomorrow. We tested the trail out this morning seemed to have a nice flow, much different and well seemed easier than the poto.
It was good to meet Deuce today. Terry, Deuce and I hung out a bit after the ride for the raffle. And next time I will accept your "cold one" offer. That was a first for me to turn one down, but trying to hold off for a bet. We will see you up at Iceman.
The ride was good. Better than I expected with the rain. I got a little muddy, but the trail was not slick. I also met with one of the mysterious jumping trees while spinning a nice flat section. He was a little rude as he decided to introduce himself as I was looking back......Spectacular over the bars flip soon followed. Too bad no one was there to witness as it was a good one. A few scrapes and a bruised elbow, but not too bad.

Hey guys thanks for the input. Sand doesn't really give me much trouble and I live for hills. I will probably drop down to a 34 x 16 for race day. That lets me get around the tight stuff pretty well.
