UP fires contained, but threat still high

MARQUETTE -- Campers spending the Memorial Day weekend at Upper Peninsula sites are being asked to use caution because dry conditions are keeping the threat of new wildfires high.
Crews are continuing to mop up after containing two wildfires in the north central Upper Peninsula.
Fires that began Wednesday near Ishpeming in Marquette County and near L'Anse in Baraga County were contained after scorching about 806 acres and 685 acres, respectively. No injuries were reported.
Robert Ziel, a fire specialist with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, said the still-smoldering Marquette County fire was being monitored Saturday. He said crews were battling small fires in Iron County and a second fire in Marquette County.
